End of Year Business Tips

Every year in business is a learning year.

As the winds are often changing in terms of marketing, client buying styles and design trends, it’s an important part of your job to keep up and keep moving onto the next right step to reach your goals!

Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that one good year will lead to continued success.

Which is why you need to stay engaged and focus on the next right steps in your floral business!

After 24 seasons as a wedding florist, I’ve had ups and downs in my business, but there’s no denying that things have been feeling a bit more down than many of us have experienced before.

Instead of pacing the floor or letting the sudden influx of price conscious clients get me down, I’ve learned through many years of practice that I can actually DO something to change the current trajectory of my business.

It takes some personal reflection, accountability and determination, but it’s worth the effort to find direction and feel confident in your actions!

As the year rapidly comes to a close, here’s what I’m doing in my own small business:

#1. Running the numbers.

I’m looking at all of my expenses to decide where I need to cut back and how much more I want to spend before the end of the tax year.

Sometimes, spending money in your business is a good thing after all–for tax purposes, for educational purposes, etc.

I’m also looking ahead and future-casting my cash flow based on 2026 bookings so far.

It can be as simple as asking:

  • Are you able to pay your expenses for the next 6-12 months with your current savings?
  • What’s the estimated profit margin on the sales you already have booked?
  • What will it take to to fill the gap between where you are and where you want to be?

#2. Putting my best foot forward.

When I get an inquiry from a wedding planner or a new client, I’m focusing on what will serve them best and adapting my service to accommodate their requests wherever possible.

This might mean writing a quote without gatekeeping (for example, not setting a firm minimum before a consultation) to help customers experience the value I provide before deciding if we’re a good match.

If budget is the #1 deciding factor, so be it–perhaps we are not a good match.

But if clients need a little more time and attention to help get to a “yes”, the least we can do is find a way to meet them part-way where possible!

#3. Marketing with a strategy.

This is a perpetual part of my process, but I’m re-examining all of the branding and marketing efforts in my businesses.

From how much money I’m spending on advertising, to the areas where I’ve slacked and fallen short, it’s the perfect time to improve my marketing strategy because they are always a work in progress.

It’s easy to get lost in a sea of social media “content”, but I don’t create content.

I provide a more valuable service and it’s my job to make sure customers know I’m the best choice for them!

#4. Planning ahead.

What do I need to do next to reach my business and life goals?

What skills do I need to sharpen?

How can I best be of service in a way that thrills and delights my customers?

What does it really look like to reach the “next level” in my business?

CEO Mindset In Your Floral Business

How important is it to have a CEO mindset in your floral business?

Today, I have a few tips on how getting into a CEO mindset will help you to EASE into the new year–without adding anything to your to-do list!

Because when you run a business and you do “all the things”, it can be hard to zoom out to see the big picture and set next-level goals.

Whether you work alone (like me!) or you lead a team, the most important thing is that you know where you want to go and what you need to let go of! Take a few moments to watch.

Do you work ON your business as much as you work IN your business?

Are your customer service systems seamless and effective?

Is your brand mission and message clear?

What are you paying attention to?

Are you spending your time wisely?

What is your next best step to get closer to your own unique goals?

How are you investing in your future growth?…

How To Stop Losing Weddings

Everyone has to start somewhere in their business, but what do you do when you’re really ready to level-up your brand and attract better clients?

My business started organically and it was ALL DIY!–from business cards I printed on my home computer to the “flyers” and occasional print ads I ran in the local papers.

I only booked 1 wedding my first year in business–it was ALL sunflowers–and I felt lucky to book the work! The next year I grew my bookings to 5 weddings (thanks to some friends, and friends of friends, getting married, of course!) and then, I slowly began to build from there….10 weddings, 25 weddings, 34 weddings!….but my business still wasn’t growing the way I wanted it to.

 

You see, even after 7 or 8 years in business, I kept losing the “better events” to another florist. (Like the same florist every time.)

Was this other florist more established than me? YES.

Did they have a team that did 20+ weddings per month? YES.

Was I capable of designing flowers as beautiful as their team? YES!

So why was I losing out over and over again?

 

Simple. They Had Better Brand Position.

 

I had to face the fact that even though I’d been in business for a little while and I had a lot to be proud of already, my business simply didn’t have the appearance on the outside that reflected how professional and capable I was in real life (on the inside)! Choosing me wasn’t a “no brainer”…yet!

 

And frankly, this was really maddening! Because time and time again I’d get the same basic reply, “We really enjoyed talking to you and we’re sure you’d do a wonderful job, but we went with another florist.”

So I decided I had to take action to figure out how to level-up to become the CLEAR choice from now on.

 

The action I took was to invest in a higher-level marketing and branding course (it was about $3,000 at the time, which was 20x more than I’d ever invested before!) and I committed to following the program and completing the course assignments.

 

It took me about 6 weeks of training (oh, and I had a tiny little newborn baby to contend with as well!), but I slowly started to put the pieces of my own marketing and branding puzzle together and you know what?….I started to feel a little differently about my business.

 

Now I won’t lie and tell you that I saw an immediate turnaround in my booking rate or my brand position–building a better brand doesn’t happen overnight! 

 

BUT what I did begin to understand right away was how much OPPORTUNITY I had to actually reach those “better clients” (my ideal clients) with some strategic messaging and a more functional website!

 

And that opportunity began to give me a lot of useful information (as well as a little bit of optimism) that I had the power to turn this thing around!

 

So I continued the work and continued to get OBSESSED with my ideal clients and to find out who they really were and what they really needed to hear from me to get to a YES!

 

Now, when clients inquire with me, they are interested in working with ME, not just any florist.

Now, when clients go to my website they tell me how much they LOVE it.

Now, when I send a proposal, they book me quickly, instead of shopping around.

Now, when clients DON’T book with me, I am not worried that it’s because I didn’t put my best foot forward!

And now, that “other florist” still has a good brand position, but clients choose ME OVER THEM lots of times!

 

And after years and years of doing this work to attract the right clients and build an integrity brand, it’s a genuine passion of mine to help florists do the same thing by tapping into your own unique branding potential!

Top 10 Florist Tips of 2021

As a general rule I find it’s best to look forward in my business, however, as 2021 comes to a close there’s a lot of hubbub about “top moments” and “best of” lists so it seems only fitting to reflect on some of the conversations and topics from the Real Flower Business community:

  • I started off last January with a question: Who Is Your Ideal Client (this was in preparation for my yearly program, The Art of Good Business)

 

  • Ben Cross at Crosslands Flower Nursery in the UK shared his family’s sustainable alstroemeria production with us and his #BritishFlowersRock campaign

 

  • April was dedicated to Newbie Tips on Instagram including: How Long Do Flowers Last?, a quick tutorial on How I Clean Stock and a behind-the-scenes look at How I Prep for A Wedding In My Small Home Studio

 

  • I shared time saving strategies for florists with 3 Tips on Writing Proposals Quickly

 

  • Ad we celebrated 5 Years in Community over in my free Facebook Group in July

 

  • I also broke down Tips for Running A Successful Floral Business (and what it means to define your OWN version of success)

 

  • Answered the question: How do florists actually “do a wedding” with Day-Of Wedding Prep Tips and a look at What I Bring To Every Wedding

 

  • In October, I got the opportunity to sit down with Michelle Lane of Something’s Blooming, to talk about How The Wedding Industry Can Be More LGBTQ+ Inclusive

 

  • In November, I hosted a Vision & Goal Setting Session and taught 3 days of live trainings to students inside my Marketing Minicourse (all replays are available now inside the course)

 

  • And it was so much fun to talk marketing with floral designers and flower farmers that I hosted a 3 day free Branding & Marketing Training for Florists in December, in preparation for enrollment in, The Art of Good Business, my online course and group coaching program, which begins January 4th, 2022!

While everyone is recapping the year, I just want to remind you of 1 thing:

Nothing’s ending–

it’s not over,

you didn’t miss it,

it’s OK if it isn’t “that special”,

all your efforts are part of what you’re building towards

and the “end of a year”, doesn’t mean anything is actually over…
